Background of the Study
Business process automation (BPA) involves the use of technology to automate routine tasks and workflows, reducing manual intervention and improving efficiency (McKeen & Smith, 2023). In the healthcare sector, where accuracy and timeliness are critical, BPA can significantly enhance operational efficiency by streamlining administrative processes, patient management, and medical recordkeeping (Abdullah & Adewale, 2024). Hospitals in Sokoto State face operational inefficiencies due to outdated processes, lack of automation, and poor integration of information systems. These inefficiencies lead to delays in patient care, increased operational costs, and errors in medical records.
This study will examine how hospitals in Sokoto State are adopting business process automation and the impact it has on organizational efficiency. With increasing pressure to improve patient outcomes and reduce costs, hospitals that implement BPA effectively are better positioned to enhance service delivery, optimize resource allocation, and improve financial performance (Suleiman & Ahmed, 2025). The research will assess the extent to which BPA has been implemented in Sokoto hospitals and its impact on overall operational efficiency.
Statement of the Problem
Hospitals in Sokoto State are struggling with inefficiencies due to manual processes, leading to delays in patient care, mismanagement of resources, and increased operational costs. While some hospitals have adopted certain aspects of automation, many still rely on traditional methods for managing patient information, billing, and supply chains. This study aims to investigate the role of business process automation in improving organizational efficiency and identify the challenges hospitals in Sokoto State face when implementing BPA.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the extent of business process automation in hospitals in Sokoto State.
2. To evaluate the impact of BPA on organizational efficiency in Sokoto State hospitals.
3. To identify the challenges faced by hospitals in Sokoto State when implementing business process automation.
Research Questions
1. To what extent have hospitals in Sokoto State implemented business process automation?
2. How does business process automation affect organizational efficiency in Sokoto State hospitals?
3. What challenges do hospitals in Sokoto State face when adopting business process automation?
Research Hypotheses
1. H₁: There is a positive relationship between business process automation and organizational efficiency in hospitals in Sokoto State.
2. H₂: Hospitals in Sokoto State that have implemented BPA experience improved patient care and resource management.
3. H₃: The major challenges to business process automation in Sokoto State hospitals are insufficient technology and lack of trained personnel.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on hospitals in Sokoto State that have implemented or are in the process of implementing business process automation. Data will be collected through surveys and interviews with hospital administrators and staff. Limitations include the potential reluctance of some hospitals to share information on their internal processes and the varying levels of automation across different hospitals.
